El nostre hort i la màquina de creixement: la lluita per mantenir el Raval per al barri

L’Àgora Juan Andrés Benítez, un hort comunitari imprescindible al Raval, amenaçat de desallotjament el 14 de maig mentre la màquina de creixement urbà de Barcelona s’emporta un a un els espais que li donen vida. Cridem al moviment decreixentista que s’hi posi al costat.
A Barcelona, una ciutat que es presenta com a referent mundial del decreixement, l’administració fa temps que va a la caça dels espais comunitaris de base que li donen contingut real. Com a estudiants del màster de decreixement, fem una crida a la comunitat decreixentista més àmplia perquè defensi aquestes llavors de decreixement real i existent, que ja estan construint el món pel qual lluitem.
L’Àgora Juan Andrés Benítez
L’Àgora Juan Andrés Benítez és un d’aquests espais de poder col·lectiu i de suport mutu. Fa més d’onze anys que dóna serveis essencials en un barri que porta dècades a primera línia de la gentrificació. Va néixer al solar buit del carrer que fou escenari d’un assassinat. El 2013, agents dels Mossos d’Esquadra van matar el veí del Raval i membre de la comunitat queer Juan Andrés Benítez. L’Àgora és un espai de memòria, però tambe és molt més que això: dona servei a centenars de famílies i veïns a través de menjars calents, zones verdes, suport jurídic i, sobre tot, com a espai d’organització per a més de 400 grups.
Ara afronta un desallotjament imminent el 14 de maig, impulsat per Sareb, l’empresa pública de gestió d’actius. Malgrat el discurs de sostenibilitat i utilitat social, Sareb està darrera d’una onada de desnonaments que estan desmantellant espais autogestionats arreu del Raval i de Barcelona. Sareb va ser creada per l’Estat espanyol arran de la crisi financera del 2008 per absorbir els actius ‘tòxics’ i rescatar els grans bancs amb diners públics. Un d’aquests actius, que Sareb i l’Estat veuen com un problema a liquidar i quadrar en un full de càlcul, és aquest hort comunitari tan valuós.
Sareb no és un problema local
Però Sareb, més enllà de ser el monstre de desallotjaments a Espanya, forma part d’un ecosistema d’empreses públiques i multinacionals que sostenen la infraestructura del genocidi i l’apartheid. Els fons d’inversió nord-americans que gestionen la cartera de 25.000 milions d’euros de Sareb, Blackstone i KKR, estan íntimament lligats al genocidi i l’apartheid en curs a Palestina, finançant i beneficiant-se de la construcció immobiliària il·legal a Cisjordània.
Sareb és un node més d’un sistema global que converteix la necessitat pública en benefici privat, que finança el desposseïment a Palestina i envia notificacions de desnonaments al Raval, i que sempre busca arreu béns comuns per suprimir-los.
Un pulmó verd en un barri sense espai per respirar
Construïda al marge de la lògica de mercat neoliberalista en resistència a l’apropiació d’espais promoguda per l’Estat, l’Àgora va néixer al cor del Raval, un dels barris més densament poblats i amb menys recursos de tot Europa. Forma part d’una llarga tradició de construir espais autogestionats en solars buits i abandonats per atendre les necessitats immediates del barri – el Raval és el districte de Barcelona amb menys espais verds per habitant. El veïnat registra habitualment les temperatures més altes de la ciutat, amb 88 ‘nits tropicals’ l’any 2025, és a dir, nits en què el termòmetre no baixa dels 20 graus. En aquest context, l’Àgora continua sent un dels últims espais verds d’accés lliure per a la gent del barri.
En lloc de protegir aquests refugis climàtics de base, el govern municipal ha estat volcant els seus esforços a l’augment de la turistificació. L’any passat, la policia va desallotjar per la força l’Antiga Massana, un estimat espai comunitari okupat. Mentrestant, a tan sols 500 metres, l’Ajuntament dona suport a un consorci d’actors privats que volen ampliar el museu MACBA que rep uns 5 milions d’euros anuals. Aquesta ampliació envaeix un espai públic fonamental, mentre que el 90% dels visitants del MACBA són turistes.
L’Àgora és a primera línia
L’Àgora és a primera línia de la resistència contra l’apropiació d’aquests espais que queden, venuts a poc a poc per fer-ne negoci. És la frontera que separa les necessitats dels veïns de la màquina de creixement urbà. Aquest petit però combatiu hort comunitari ens demostra que existeix una altra manera d’imaginar els nostres barris: des de baix, verds, vius, i amb la cura i la comunitat al centre. Són els espais que cal defensar en la batalla per les nostres ciutats.
Vivim un moment decisiu en la defensa d’aquests espais autogestionats que queden. Espais com l’Àgora són un salvavides, no una molèstia ni un obstacle per treure’n profit. Són fonamentals. Quan l’Àgora acull jornades de política i sessions de l’escola d’estiu de R&Di, aquesta relació simbiótica es fa del tot tangible. Cridem tots els membres i aliats de la comunitat decreixentista a signar la petició, a fer una donació i a sumar-se a la protesta.

Our Garden and the Growth Machine: The Fight to keep Raval for the Neighbourhood
L’Àgora Juan Andrés Benítez, a vital community garden in El Raval, is threatened with eviction on May 14th as Barcelona’s financialised urban growth machine grinds down the community spaces that give the city life. We call on the degrowth movement to stand in its defence.
In Barcelona, a city widely considered a centre for degrowth thought and action, the government is systematically targeting and dismantling the legacy grassroots community spaces that give degrowth life. As students of the degrowth master, we are calling on the wider degrowth community to defend these seeds of Real Existing Degrowth, already enacting the world we’re fighting for.
L’Àgora Juan Andrés Benítez
L’Àgora Juan Andrés Benítez is one of these spaces of collective power and mutual aid. For over 11 years, it has been providing vital services in a neighbourhood witnessing and resisting the full force of gentrification. L’Àgora was built on the vacant lot on the street that was the site of a murder, when police officers of the Mossos d’Esquadra killed El Raval neighbour and member of the queer community Juan Andrés Benitez in 2013. It’s a memorial site that serves hundreds of families and community members, through hot meals, green space, legal support, and as a critical organizing space for over 400 groups..
It now faces imminent eviction on May 14th by state-backed asset management company, Sareb. Despite claims to centre sustainability and social utility, Sareb is behind a wave of evictions dismantling self-organised community spaces across El Raval and Barcelona. Sareb was created by the Spanish state in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis to absorb ‘toxic’ assets and bail out the large banks with public funds. One of these assets, seen by Sareb and the state as problems to be liquidated and balanced on their spreadsheets, is this vital community garden.
Sareb isn’t only a local problem
But Sareb isn’t just Spain’s eviction boogeyman – it is part of a wider ecosystem of state-owned enterprises and multinational companies that maintain the infrastructure of genocide and apartheid. The American investment funds who manage Sareb’s €25 billion portfolio, Blackstone and KKR, are deeply tied to the ongoing genocide and apartheid in Palestine, funding and profiting off of illegal real estate in the West Bank.
Sareb is one more node in a global system that turns public need into private profit, that funds dispossession in Palestine and delivers eviction notices in El Raval, and that is always, everywhere, looking for commons to enclose…
A green refuge in a neighborhood without space to breathe
Existing outside of market dynamics and in resistance to state-backed enclosures, L’Agora was built in the heart of El Raval, one of Europe’s most densely populated and underserved neighbourhoods. It is part of a long history of building self-governed community spaces on vacant and unused lots in order to serve the community’s immediate needs: El Raval is Barcelona’s district with one of the lowest rates of green space available to residents. The neighbourhood frequently records the highest temperatures in the city with 88 ‘tropical nights’ recorded in 2025 – where temperatures don’t fall below 20ºc. Meanwhile, L’Agora remains as one of the last green spaces freely accessible to the neighbourhood community.
Instead of protecting these grassroots climate refuges, the city government has been channeling its support towards increased touristification. Only last year, the squatted, beloved community space L’Antiga Massana was unlawfully evicted by police forces. Now, just 500m away, the city is supporting a consortium of private actors in their plans to expand the MACBA art gallery to the tune of approximately €5 million annually. The expansion cuts deep into a vital public space, while MACBA visitors are 90% tourists.
L’Àgora is on the frontline
L’Àgora is on the frontline of resistance against the state-backed encroachment of these remaining spaces being sold off for profit. It’s the frontline running between resident’s needs and the urban growth machine. This small but mighty community garden shows us that there is another way to imagine our urban neighbourhoods: from the bottom up, green, vibrant, and with care and community at the heart. These are the spaces we must defend in the battle for our cities.
We bear witness to a crucial time in the defence of these remaining autonomous spaces. Spaces like L’Àgora are a lifeline, not an inconvenience or an obstacle to profit. They are fundamental. When L’Àgora is hosting R&D’s policy briefs and summer school sessions this symbiotic relationship is clearly tangible. We call on all members and allies of the wider degrowth community to sign the petition, donate, and join us at the protest!
